On the first day of Christmas, Santa Tim Bezbatchenko gave TFC fans Gilberto Oliveira Souza Junior.
So it’s not Christmas yet, but talk about a gift! A 24-year-old Brazilian forward signing on for Toronto FC (as a Designated Player) is no small matter, that’s for sure! Gilberto looks the part of star player, and he said as much, when he told press that he wanted to become a champion and a star in Major League Soccer.
There are questions about the move, of course – namely, why is he signing with Toronto FC? It seems like a classic “too good to be true” situation, doesn’t it? It’s like getting a Nintendo Wii for Christmas back when parents would scratch and claw and fight for one. Brazilian forwards who can score are often sought highly by European sides, but somehow, Toronto FC’s front office got their hands on Gilberto and closed the deal quickly.
Gilberto could be the surprise of the season; like Danny Koevermans, he will soon be overshadowed by a bigger, more recognizable name, but like the Dutch forward he replaces, Gilberto could very well be the more important player if he can score regularly.
Toronto FC as a team must score about 30 more goals per year; so, here’s hoping that Gilberto can score goals by the bucketful and bring some Brazilian magic to BMO Field!
