Ottawa Fury lost a heartbreaker in New York as they fell 2-1 to the Cosmos on Saturday in a game they deserved to win. The loss means that Fury are now mathematically eliminated from the NASL playoffs, with three games remaining.
The Fury squad was slightly changed from the one that rescued a point in San Antonio last week, with Woodbine starting at left back and Oliver replacing Mayard in the left wing position. Fury captain Richie Ryan missed the match and was replaced by the young Mauro Eustaquio in the central midfield position.
The Opening 45
Ottawa started the game off very strongly, with both Jarun and Oliver creating excellent scoring chances in the opening ten minutes. Oliver was replaced by Mayard early on after the Brazilian striker was elbowed in the face by Cosmos midfielder Szetela, resulting in a yellow card. The elbow to the face seemed to knock out at least one of Oliver’s teeth and was described as “experienced” by Fury coach Marc Dos Santos post game, with the Ottawa coach insisting it should have been a red card.
New York slowly worked their way back into the game after the Fury squad lost all their momentum with the stop of play. It took Ottawa another ten minutes to get back in control of the game, having a Tommy Heinemann goal called back after it was revealed to be an offside play. At the other end of the pitch the Cosmos were able to find a goal on the counter attack, giving them an 1-0 lead just before the half.
The Second Half
Ottawa started the second half with a lot of pace and energy as they quickly found a goal in the 58th minute through Tommy Heinemann. The striker was able to get his toe on the end of a Phil Davies pass, making up for the goal that was called back earlier in the game.
From that point on Ottawa always seemed as the team more likely to score, despite the fact that Cosmos controlled possession at times. As tensions rose and the yellow cards piled up, Cosmos coach was ejected from the game with 15 minutes left after apparently leaving the technical area, forcing him to watch the match through a chain linked fence.
Omar Jarun stood strong in defence, denying the Cosmos several times and making many clinical tackles, all while wearing the captain’s armband. Despite Ottawa’s fantastic performance on the night, Cosmos were able to add an injury time goal to give them a 2-1 win. Tommy Heinemann was sent off after earning two yellows in injury time, earning him a suspension for next week’s home match against FC Edmonton.
Man of the Match
Omar Jarun
Omar Jarun played an excellent game in central defense and made a lot of important tackles that kept Ottawa in the game when the Cosmos were pushing for a goal. At times his height and strength proved to be too much for the Cosmos strikers.
Honorable Mention
Phil Davies had a great game on the right wing as he provided agility and pace down the flank, setting up Fury’s only goal with a fantastic cross.
