Footy Round-Up: Canadian MLS week in review
Toronto FC defeated the Montreal Impact 3-2 (3-3) at BMO Field, but dropped the aggregate tie on away goals after losing 1-0 at Stade Saputo. Former TFC winger Dominic Oduro scored the decisive goal for the Impact in the 84th minute after goals from Jozy Alitdore, Benoit Cheyrou and Sebastien Giovinco helped Toronto to a 3-1 lead. Kenny Cooper made his first start for the Impact and scored Montreal’s other goal. Toronto bounced back in MLS play, picking up a valuable away point in a 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution. Captain Michael Bradley salvaged the draw for the visitors with a brilliant goal in the 53rd minute. Next up for Toronto (3-5-1) is a home matchup against the Portland Timbers.
After getting through Toronto in the semifinal of the Canadian Championship on away goals, the Montreal Impact won their first game of the MLS season in decisive fashion, pounding visiting Real Salt Lake 4-1. Andres Romero led the charge with a brace in the first half, while Laurent Ciman and Dilly Duka each notched their first goals of the season. The Impact (1-3-2) will look to continue the momentum they built this week into next weekends match against FC Dallas.
The Vancouver Whitecaps settled for a 1-1 draw with FC Edmonton in the first leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal at BC Place. Gershon Koffie lifted the spirits of the home fans with an equalizing goal in the 87th minute, leaving all to play for in the second leg next week at Clarke Field in Edmonton. Unfortunately for the Whitecaps, there would be no late game heroics against the Seattle Sounders at BC Place, as two goals from Chad Barrett paced the visitors to a 2-0 victory. Vancouver (6-4-2) remains in second place in the Western Conference and will travel to face the Colorado Rapids after the second leg of their tie against Edmonton.
Stud – Montreal Impact
Montreal turned things around in convincing fashion this week, first getting past Toronto FC on away goals in the Amway Canadian Championship and then thrashing Real Salt Lake at Stade Saputo. The next challenge for the Impact will be to find consistency in their game as they try to continue their recent positive form against Real Salt Lake.
Dud – Los Angeles Galaxy
The Galaxy were taken to the woodshed by Orlando City FC, who picked up their first home win of the season by a score of 4-0. The Galaxy were without star defender Omar Gonazalez and were forced to field Baggio Husidic, a natural central midfielder, at left-back. The defending MLS Champions will look to respond from this setback against the Houston Dynamo at Stub Hub Center on Friday.
