On the second day of Christmas, the football Gods gave TFC fans a goalkeeper worth keeping around.
Stefan Frei has finally been traded to a team where he can start; the Swiss shot stopper has been traded to the Seattle Sounders, who recently parted ways with their own starting keeper, Michael Gspurning. With little competition for the spot (save for the aging Marcus Hahnemann), it looks like Frei’s holiday wish of escaping the bench has come true!
This puts the responsibilities of minding Toronto FC’s net on the ever-capable shoulders of Joe Bendik. The club has re-signed Bendik to a multi-year contract, reaffirming its commitment to the man and backing him for a starting role. So, on this, the second day of our holiday countdown, let Bendik’s second year at Toronto FC be as productive, effective and worthy of praise (if not more so) as his first!
With Chris Konopka and Quillan Roberts behind him, Bendik will have to perform. For the first time in many years, Toronto FC does not possess two capable starting goalkeepers. Konopka has some experience but is an unproven keeper in the league; Roberts is still far too young.
Bendik is a keeper worth keeping and one that will hopefully avoid a second-year slump!
