On the third day of Christmas, Tim Leiweke gave to TFC, a third superstar DP.
The promise in September was to give Toronto FC two new marquee Designated Players, and, like a parent who promises their child a Tickle-Me Elmo no matter how life-threatening it is to actually get one, they absolutely have to deliver.
Matias Laba and Gilberto form a DP duo but it’s the third and final DP that has the most people talking. Rumours of Jermain Defoe, Samuel Eto’o, Alberto Gilardino and Miroslav Klose have permeated around the club for several months now. It seemed for a while that Gilardino was closest, then Defoe. Now, Toronto FC fans are in a state of waiting, like a permanent December 24th, too anxious to sleep and yet desparate to wake up in the morning to the greatest gift of all.
Whoever Toronto FC does sign, one thing is clear; they’ll need to perform, individually and with the rest of the team. If it indeed is Defoe who makes his way over – we’ll have to see what the next coach after Andre Villas-Boas says – then he’ll need to score in the double digits and show that he’s worth the $150,000-a-week he’ll be reportedly paid.
Big promises, big names, big output: it’s the criteria for the club’s three DP friends. Let’s hope they get along.
